THOMAS LOPEZ TAKES A PLEA TO MURDER

Clovis, NM – Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Quentin Ray, announced that on March 27, 2023, Thomas Lopez, age 33, of Portales, pled guilty to Murder, Kidnapping and Resisting, Evading, or obstructing an officer. 

On February 24, 2022, Deputies with the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Roosevelt General Hospital where they located the victim that had been kidnapped, beaten, battered and struck with a golf club multiple times.   The victim later succumbed to her injuries that were sustained by Lopez beating her with the golf club. 

The Honorable Judge Donna Mowrer presided over the hearing and sentenced Thomas Lopez to eighteen (18) years in the Department of Corrections which includes a four-year habitual offender enhancement.  The court finds that this is a serious violent offense, and Lopez will have to serve 85% of his sentence.

The case was prosecuted by District Attorney, Quentin Ray, and Lopez was represented by criminal defense attorney, Megan Mitsunaga of Albuquerque.
