Smith Sentenced for 2021 Trafficking

Portales, NM – Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Quentin Ray, announced that today, April 17, 2024, Alton Pete Smith, age 56, of Portales, was sentenced to fifteen (15) years in prison for Trafficking Controlled Substances.

On June 6, 2021, Deputies from the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on South Roosevelt Rd. 3/US Hwy 70. Smith’s suspicious behaviors and inability to provide documentation of the vehicle led to a search warrant of the vehicle, in which a trafficking amount of methamphetamine, a scale, and baggies were located and seized.

The Honorable Donna J. Mowrer presided over the trial and on April 17, 2024, sentenced Alton Smith to fifteen years in prison because the defendant had previously been convicted of Trafficking Methamphetamine in Bernalillo County.

The case was prosecuted by Brian Scott Stover, Deputy District Attorney, and Alton Smith was represented by criminal defense attorney, Blake J. Dugger of Lovington, NM.
