CLOVIS, N.M. – Ninth Judicial District Attorney Quentin Ray announces that Alejandro Astorga-Chavez has been sentenced to 15 years in the New Mexico Department of Corrections following his conviction on multiple felony charges, including trafficking a controlled substance, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle, and aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer.
The sentence was handed down today by District Court Judge David Reeb.
The charges stem from a May 12, 2025 incident in which Clovis Police Department officers responded to reports of a male who had discharged a firearm. During the investigation, officers identified Alejandro Astorga-Chavez as the suspect. A search warrant was subsequently obtained for the vehicle he had been driving. During the execution of the warrant, investigators located a hidden firearm beneath the vehicle’s center console, approximately 21 grams of methamphetamine and drug-trafficking paraphernalia inside the vehicle. Astorga-Chavez, a convicted felon with a history of fleeing police officers and drug related offenses, was prohibited from possessing any firearm.
“This sentence reflects the seriousness of the defendant’s actions and reaffirms the District Attorney’s Office’s commitment to working with law enforcement to hold violent offenders accountable.” said District Attorney Quentin Ray.
Special Prosecutor Brett Carter represented the State. Astorga-Chavez was represented by Kaitlyn Cochran of the Law Office of the Public Defender.
