Judge Sentences Lewis to 34 years for Shooting at Police Officers

Clovis, NM – Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Quentin Ray, announced that on February 23, 2023, Marcus Lewis, age 22, of Clovis, was sentenced to 34 years in the Department of Corrections for shooting at two Clovis Police Officers and a Curry County, Deputy Sheriff. Lewis was found to be a habitual offender with one prior felony conviction.  Shooting at Law Enforcement Officers is a Serious Violent Offense per New Mexico law and Lewis will have to serve 85% of the sentence. 

The Honorable Judge Tatum presided over the hearing and stated, “[Its troubling to me, not just what you have done but what is being done in this community where guns are being used.  I wish I could stop these actions of young people dying or going to prison and ruining their lives. In this case, you had total disregard shooting at officers.  There has to be punishment in order to protect this community].”

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney, Brett Carter, and Marcus Lewis was represented by criminal Defense Attorney, Sandra Gallagher, of Portales.
