Clovis NM – Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Andrea Reeb, announced that today a Curry County jury found Lorenzo Martinez, age 52, of Clovis, guilty of First Degree Murder and Criminal Sexual Penetration, a third degree felony.
The homicide occurred on February 13, 2017, when Martinez himself contacted Clovis Police to report that he stabbed a female victim multiple times and then had sex with her twice after she died. Martinez told police that the female was “annoying” him.
Much of the trial, which began on Monday, centered on mental illness and whether Martinez was sane at the time of the crimes. Among the testimony provided were two experts in psychology and mental health. The jury deliberated today for about four and one-half hours before returning their verdicts.
The Honorable Fred Van Soelen presided over the trial and ordered that sentencing be held on Tuesday, October 9, 2018. The defendant is facing a life sentence, plus three years. The sentence could be further enhanced by one year for the defendant’s prior felony conviction.
Brian Scott Stover, Chief Deputy District Attorney and Claire Adams, Assistant District Attorney, prosecuted the case for the State. Gary C. Mitchell, Criminal Defense Attorney from Ruidoso, NM, represented Martinez.
