Jurisdiction Given To Military On Airmen Death

July 17, 2018

Clovis NM – Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Andrea Reeb, announced today that Cannon Air Force Base will be given jurisdiction to prosecute the death of a Cannon airman.  Marcus Jimenez, 23, of Olton, Texas, died from gunshot wound that occurred in Clovis on July 5, 2018. Police stated in a release that two men had been “playing” with a firearm while consuming alcohol. Jimenez was transported to the Plains Regional Medical Center and then to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas where he died on July 10, 2018.

District Attorney Andrea Reeb stated, “After speaking with the military, law enforcement involved, and the victim’s family, I believe letting the military handle a case involving two of their own airman is the best decision.  The military should be allowed in certain circumstances to handle cases that impact their organization.  The military’s penalties are similar if not higher than the State’s penalties. The District Attorney’s Office will continue to assist the military in any way possible.”
