Clovis, NM - Ninth Judicial District Attorney Andrea Reeb announced that Anthony M. Baca, age 34, of Clovis, was found guilty today of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a fourth degree felony. A Curry County jury heard testimony this morning and after deliberating for 15 minutes, returned their verdict shortly after noon.
Baca was arrested after police were called to a burglary in progress. The caller reported a burglary at his house, where Baca attempted to hide in some bushes and threatened the caller with a knife. Baca is the same individual charged in the alleged shooting Clovis Police Officer, Chris Caron. That case along with four other cases against Baca are all pending jury trial.
The Honorable Fred Van Soelen presided over the trial today and sentenced Baca to 2 and 1/2 years in prison, which included a one year enhancement for a prior felony conviction.
Chief Deputy District Attorney, Brian Stover prosecuted the case for the State. Brett Carter, Criminal Defense Attorney, represented Baca.
