Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office Truancy Program Grand Prize Winner

May 14, 2016

Clovis, NM -  Ninth Judicial District Attorney Andrea Reeb announced that sponsors of the Ninth Judicial District Attorney's Abolish Chronic Truancy Program (A.C.T.) awarded the grand prize to Shawn Pierce, a student at Sandia Elementary School in Clovis.

A.C.T. is a proactive program created by Ninth Judicial District Attorney's Office to combat student dropout rates and increase school attendance.  Every school year, members of the District Attorney's Office speak in schools throughout Curry and Roosevelt Counties and explain to students the correlation between life in the criminal justice system and those that elect to drop out of school.  In addition, the District Attorney's Office explains the hefty advantages in life of those that obtain an education and finish school along with the offering of incentives and giveaways from local businesses to those that have perfect attendance at the end of the school year.

Shawn Pierce's name was drawn from over 350 students with perfect school attendance. The grand prize includes an all-expense paid trip to Dallas, Texas, which includes airfare, hotel accommodations, tickets to Six-Flags and Hurricane Harbor, tickets to a Texas Rangers Major League Baseball game, and $500 spending cash.  The trip is courtesy of McDonalds, Rooney & Moon Broadcasting, and Taco Box.  Other sponsors include:  LaQuinta Inn and Suites Arlington TX.

The A.C.T. program has been conducting end-of-year school assemblies throughout Curry and Roosevelt Counties, with its popular mascot "Squatch", giving away dozens of bikes and gift cards as prizes for students that had perfect attendance this school year.
