Clovis, NM ~ Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Andrea Reeb, announced that Lonzell Wiggins, age 43, of Clovis, NM, was found guilty today by a Curry County jury of Criminal Sexual Penetration. The jury heard two days of testimony and deliberated for about an hour before returning the guilty verdict.
The charges stem from an incident in November of 2011, when the victim reported that she had been sexually molested. Wiggins was arrested shortly after the crime occurred but the case suffered many delays with several judges being excused and numerous defense attorneys assigned to the case.
"Sometimes justice can be delayed, but thanks to some hard working and dedicated support staff in the District Attorney's Office, justice for this victim was not denied." said Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Scott Stover.
The Honorable Fred Van Soelen presided over the trial. Judge Van Soelen ordered that Wiggins be taken into custody pending a sentencing hearing.
Chief Deputy District Attorney, Brian Scott Stover, prosecuted the case for the State of New Mexico, and criminal defense attorney Jonathan Miller of Albuquerque, represented the defendant.
