Portales Woman Sentenced for Drug Trafficking
Portales, NM ~ Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Andrea Reeb, announced that Heather Garcia Lyon, age 23, of Clovis, NM, was sentenced to three years in prison. On February 8, 2016, at what was scheduled to be jury selection, Lyon opted to plead guilty to both counts of Conspiracy to Commit Drug Trafficking, third degree felonies.
In June of 2014, the Region V Drug Task Force in Portales, NM, received a tip from the Lea County Drug Task Force, that there was a large amount of heroin located in a room at the Classic American Economy Inn in Portales. Upon execution of a search warrant, agents found heroin, drug paraphernalia and a large sum of cash. Lyon was arrested and booked into the Roosevelt County Detention Center. The case was delayed several times, due to Lyon being held in Lea County on charges there, as well as Lyon being out on warrant status after violating a furlough for medical treatment.
The Honorable Donna J. Mowrer presided over the hearing and found Lyon to be a habitual offender, sentencing Lyon to three years in prison to be followed by four years of supervised probation, including drug court.
Deputy District Attorney Jake Boazman prosecuted the case for the State of New Mexico, and Assistant Public Defender, Chris Christensen represented the defendant.
