Eric Valdez Pleads Guilty to Second Degree Murder
Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Andrea Reeb, announced that today Eric Valdez, age 40, of Tucumcari, NM, pleaded guilty to Second Degree Murder. Valdez was charged in the murder of Jose Barrera, age 33, of Tucumcari, that occurred in Clovis approximately July 6, 2014.
Barrera’s body was discovered by the property owner on July 7, 2014, and it was later determined that he died from a gunshot wound to the head. After an intense investigation conducted by the Major Crimes Unit, Valdez was arrested on July 11, 2014, after he confessed to the crime.
The Honorable Drew D. Tatum presided over the plea hearing today and sentenced Valdez to 15 years in prison. After hearing emotional statements from the victim’s mother and son, Judge Tatum stated, “Mr. Valdez, from this day on, you are labeled a murderer. You have taken a father, a son. You will carry this label the rest of your life and that will be a heavy burden.”
