Roosevelt County Man Sentenced to 18 years for Child Abuse
Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Andrea Reeb, announced that today Cody Schattschneider, age 31 of Portales, NM, was sentenced to the maximum 18 years in prison for Abuse of a Child resulting in Great Bodily Harm.
A Roosevelt County jury convicted Schattschneider after a four-day trial in January, 2015, at the Roosevelt County Courthouse.
The crime occurred in December, 2012, when a 4 month old child suffered a broken arm, a fractured skull, bleeding and swelling of the brain while in the care of Schattschneider.
At the hearing today, defense attorney, Chris Christensen argued for the Court to overturn the jury’s verdict. The Court rejected that argument and while the Honorable Stephen K. Quinn could have mitigated the sentence down to 12 years, he imposed the maximum sentence of 18 years in prison. The defendant refused to speak at the sentencing hearing.
The case was prosecuted by Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Scott Stover.
